Tech Tip #1: How to properly clean crankshaft oil passages

When assembling an engine, it is extremely important to clean everything as clean as it can be before putting it back togheter.

Even the smallest sediment or debris in the oil could get stuck in a bearing and end in a failure.

Sediment can get trapped in a number of places in the engine that are easily overlooked while cleaning.

One of the most often overlooked places is inside the dead ends of the oil passages inside the crankshaft.

If you bend the tip of the straw on a can of break clean, it can direct the spray of the fluild to flush the sediment out of these passages before they are able to make it into your oiling system.

In this tech tip, Jay shows how to properly clean any debris from deep within the complex oil passages inside your crankshaft using a bend in the spray straw. Simply spraying parts cleaner into the hole will not get all of the debris out, and will leave behind material that can ruin your bearings. Understanding the shape of the oil passages helps a lot.
