Description

This is a brand new AEM Failsafe Device. It is a full kit complete with the gauge, sensor, mounting hardware, wiring, and instructions.

THIS IS AEM's NEWEST PRODUCT ON THE MARKET. IT IS THE MOST ADVANCED, AND EASIEST TO USE WIDEBAND ON THE MARKET TODAY.

WHAT IS IT?

Its a wideband, its a 30psi boost gauge, and it will saVe your engine.

The AEM Failsafe Device is a wideband o2 meter that not only displays Air Fuel Ratio, but can also be programmed with user-defined limits, that can activate an output when exceeded. What does this mean? You can set the parameters for the wideband to say "if the air fuel ratio goes leaner than 13:1 while the car is making more than 6psi of boost, activate the output wire". It's up to you to wire the output wire to accomplish the "failsafe" action you see fit. For example you could cut ignition, or cut the power to the injectors, when the AFR parameters are exceeded. Or you could have the output wire trigger a relay that turns your boost controller off (returning the system back to wastegate-spring boost) when it encounters a problem. All of these things can save your engine from breaking in the event that theres a problem.

BOOST GAUGE

The Failsafe device has a big digital display on it that can be configured to display AFR, Lambda, AND BOOST. The gauge has a vacuum nipple on the back side that lets you hook up to a boost/vacuum source under the hood. The Failsafe Device has a built in boost gauge so all you have to do is hook the line up and now you have boost. You can hook your laptop up to the gauge and flip back and forth between Boost and AFR.

FULL TIME INTERNAL LOGGING

The new AEM Failsafe Device logs data to its internal storage for 3 hours at which point it starts overwriting the oldest data automatically. It logs AFR, RPM, and Boost/Vacuum, three very important pieces of information when logging a car. All you have to do is make your pull, then later you can hook your laptop up to the gauge and pull your data log off to review in the AEM log viewing software. No AEM Gauge ever came with internal data logging so this is a new and very important feature of this gauge. You DO NOT need to have your laptop hooked up to record the log, only to download it for viewing later.

CUSTOMIZABLE FACES

The Failsafe Device gauge face has 2 separate read-outs on it. One is a digital display, that can show numbers, the other is the colored ring around the top of the gauge that shows from green to orange to red. One can be set to boost, and one can be set to AFR, you have your choice of picking which is which, and there are gauge faces included for each.

AFR UNIT CONVERSIONS

If you are using alternative fuels like E85, Alcohol, etc...you can configure the gauge to output Lambda instead of AFR, that way it doesnt matter what fuel you are using.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT THAN THE CHEAPER AEM UEGO WIDEBAND 30-4100

The AEM 30-4100 Wideband that has been around for several years was a great product that everyone could benefit from, however it could only display information visually by itself. It was up to you to watch the gauge, and act quickly if you saw things go bad. This is the first wideband AEM has ever offered that can decide to save the engine for you, more quickly than you could lift your foot off the gas pedal. This wideband is intelligent in the fact that it can take your instruction through programming and activate the failsafe protocol you design to save the engine for you, before you even know there was a problem. Also, the old 30-4100 wideband could not read or display boost, this gauge is also a 30psi boost gauge. Also, the old aem wideband did not have internal datalogging, or any datalogging. All of these features make this a more technologically advanced product. This gauge is the future of wideband technology and its a no brainer to choose this gauge over the old uego wideband gauge.

The Wideband FAILSAFE Gauge provides the ability to accurately tune AFR, while actively protecting your engine by constantly monitoring AFR curves and activating a user-defined failsafe strategy if it runs lean.

The Wideband FAILSAFE Gauge is a Universal Exhaust Gas Oxygen (UEGO—“you-way-go”) controller with an internal boost sensor, an internal data logger and a full color Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display. It includes technology to activate a failsafe strategy in the event AFR falls outside of a user-defined operating window. If the AFR falls outside of the set operating window, the Wideband FAILSAFE Gauge triggers a user defined output function that can save an engine from catastrophic damage.

WHY YOU WANT ONE
This product is a must have for all tuned performance engines, either forced induction or naturally aspirated, fuel injected or carbureted. Any high performance vehicle owners who want a highly accurate AFR tuning tool with logging and a protection strategy that can save an engine from catastrophic failure will want this FAILSAFE device.

WHAT IT DOES
After the engine is tuned and a safe operating window of AFR is established, the Wideband FAILSAFE Gauge continually monitors AFR and boost or vacuum to make sure that AFR does not fall out of the defined operating window at a given boost or vacuum level. If the Wideband Failsafe detects an out of range AFR reading, the gauge triggers a low side output (ground signal with a 1.5 amp draw max) that can save your engine from catastrophic damage.

Use the gauge’s intuitive software to configure the low side output, create a user-adjustable time delay strategy to prevent false alarms, and customize the gauge lighting to flash and alert the driver if an alarm is triggered.

EXAMPLE ENGINE PROTECTION STRATEGIES
NATURALLY ASPIRATED, TURBOCHARGED OR SUPERCHARGED WITH STAND ALONE EMS OR PIGGYBACK CONTROLLER: Use the low side output to cut revs, retard timing, trigger a separate fuel or ignition map and activate an ancillary warning light. Users with turbos can also trigger the device to cut boost (may require separate solenoid). The aforementioned strategies are provided as an example. Available failsafe strategies will ultimately be dependent on the capability of the EMS or piggyback engine controller.

Use the gauge’s intuitive software to configure the low side output and create a user-adjustable time delay strategy to prevent false alarms.

ON-BOARD DATA LOGGER
The system contains an on-board data logger for logging over three hours of data recording (20 Hz per parameter) of AFR, RPM, boost, alarm, and others. Data logs can be downloaded for viewing in the new AEMdata software.

WHAT IT INCLUDES
The 52mm (2-1/16”) Wideband FAILSAFE Gauge includes a Bosch 4.2LSU AFR wideband sensor for monitoring and feedback of AFR and an on-board boost sensor to read vacuum or boost pressures up to 29 PSIG. Both boost and AFR can be displayed in real time on the gauge’s face using the full color OLED screen and 24 three-color sweeping LEDs. The gauge includes a low side output for triggering a failsafe strategy in the event AFR falls outside of the operating window (example strategies below), and an RPM input to log RPM for tuning purposes.

EASY TO SET UP!
Once installed, users connect to the gauge via a USB port and use the supplied software to log an engine’s safe AFR operating range, set minimum and maximum AFR ranges, alarm mode, time delay strategy, failsafe strategy and gauge display configuration.

Use the Auto-Set Limits Feature to speed the set up process.

Intuitive Gauge Configuration Tool.

Users with an AEMnet-equipped (CAN bus) device can daisy chain the Wideband FAILSAFE gauge using the AEMnet connection (adapter sold separately). Non AEMnet devices can communicate with the device using the CAN 2.0B spec protocol. An analog output for O2 feedback is provided for users without AEMnet or CAN-equipped devices to hard wire the gauge for O2 feedback or logging in a stand-alone logger.

WHY USE A WIDEBAND AIR/FUEL CONTROLLER?
Accurate AFR data is critical when tuning an engine. Running rich (very low air/fuel ratio, excessive fuel) can cause a loss in power and fuel economy, while running too lean (very high air/fuel ratio, not enough fuel) may result in serious engine damage. Using a wideband air/fuel controller during the tuning process allows you to monitor AFR and adjust tuning parameters to optimize them for maximum power and efficiency.

The Wideband FAILSAFE Gauge is an ideal engine tuning tool. The highly accurate Bosch AFR wideband sensor is maintenance free and never requires free-air calibration, enabling you to fine tune AFR from an AEM programmable engine management system, any other programmable EMS or piggyback programmer. For carbureted applications, it can tell you when it’s time to swap carb(s), change jets or simply modify fuel pressure.
